Orthodontics

At The Family Dental Practice we offer high quality orthodontic treatment provided by Dr Brian Johnson, our in-house Orthodontist providing braces in Redcar. He has worked at James Cook University providing braces for over three years and gained his Diploma in Orthodontics.

Orthodontics allows us to treat irregularities in the position of the teeth, including common issues such as overcrowding and 'buck teeth'.

This is often also the healthiest way of improving the appearance of your smile, as it does not require the destruction of tooth structure and is suitable for patients of all ages. We can also help those that have had orthodontic treatment in the past but have found that their teeth have since moved.

A perfect smile represents confidence and success in both your private and professional life. You feel great knowing not only that you look amazing but also that your smile is healthy. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean, so both your teeth and gums will be healthier for longer.
The type of brace provided by Brian is called a “fixed appliance”.

For adults, transparent low profile brackets are carefully bonded to each tooth. Combined with white wire they are very discrete.

Because the bracket is fixed to the tooth, fill three- dimensional control of the tooth is achieved so the final position of the tooth can be controlled precisely.

Adult braces usually take between 6 and 12 months to complete the treatment.
Here is an overview of orthodontics

-
Patients who have problems with their bite and the way their top and bottom teeth line up against each other are good candidates for orthodontic treatment. -
Impressions, photos and x-rays are taken at the start of treatment to determine the course of action. -
Brackets are bonded to individual teeth and wires clip onto them that gently guide the teeth into position over time. -
Good oral hygiene habits are essential during treatment and regular visits are required for check-ups and adjustments.
Life Benefits
-
Straighter teeth are healthier teeth, as there are no gaps for plaque to build up in over time.
-
Having an attractive smile will have a positive effect on your confidence.
-
Orthodontics is a long-term investment in your oral health.
-
Thanks to fixed permanent retention you can be assured that your teeth won't move after treatment is completed.
Following Treatment
Following treatment the teeth, of course, must stay in their straight position for a lifetime.

To ensure this, Brian uses a combination of bonded and removable retainers. Bonded retainers are fixed to the back of the teeth and cannot be seem.

Removable retainers are also used for night time wear and can be used as whitening trays; we include a kit at the end of treatment to enable you to get them white as well as straight!
